shedkm’s masterplan for the famous Lister Mills in Bradford, draws on industrial typology to create a series of formal axis and spaces in scale with arguably the most imposing group of Mill buildings in the UK
Lister Mills courtyard has been designed to minimise the impact of resident’s vehicles to the site. As opposed to a sea of cars, the view from all surrounding buildings is a private square with carefully considered architectural elements.
The most apparent of the architectural elements are the large painted steel ventilators, essential for the natural air changes to the car park below. These, along with the light tubes, allow natural light into the parking floor below, further reducing the running cost of this structure.
Large runs of landscape risers cater for all level changes, giving the square its civic appearance whilst level access is maintained on the other sides of the square and Mill 1’s residential entrance. The central area of the square is partially screened with vertical steel planters sheltering seating and other activities areas for residents.
