shedkm were initially approached by Capital & Centric to design a one bed house, a typology not readily available on the housing market.
The design of nowhaus is based on historic back-to-back terraced houses built in the 1950’s with small windows on the only external wall and staircases at the rear. Bathroom blocks were dotted intermittently between terraced houses.
nowhaus is contained on all three sides, with its long elevation having full height glazing to maximise daylight, and a shallow plan allows for better natural ventilation.
The house is divided into three zones. Living spaces, circulation at the side and services at the rear. The bathroom blocks in the back-to-back terraces inspired the ‘expansion’ module which allows the creation of the two and three bed houses, where a second living space is added along with extra bedrooms.
The back-to-back typology makes street layouts more efficient giving an average figure of 50 houses per hectare.
