bringing coffee to the tea factory with our first cafe

shedkm designed a new, open café space within the refurbished Tea Factory building in Liverpool for Urban Splash, who converted the factory from a disused former tea warehouse into 64,079ft2 of mixed-use workspace.

Mother Espresso is a place where an eclectic mix of office workers, residents and visitors relax, work and enjoy food and drink throughout the day.

The design grew from the formation of a large opening, connecting a neighbouring space with the impressive, but often previously empty entrance of the Tea Factory. Galvanised steel grating was used to create a secure but permeable boundary between the spaces, allowing the smells, sounds and energy of the cafe to permeate the office environment.

A new kitchen, meeting room and lounge for existing tenants of the Tea Factory building were also created. The staff kitchen on the first floor had once been an elegant, minimal space, but 15 years of use had taken their toll and it needed renovation.

shedkm were asked to provide tenants with more than a traditional kitchen space and created a generous lounge and meeting room, as well as bringing the building’s impressive, but often empty, atrium to life.
