green light for new city neighbourhood at sheffield’s former cannon brewery

A regeneration of the Cannon Mills site in Sheffield by shedkm has been given planning approval.

The decision clears the way for the next chapter for the long-dormant Stones Brewery, empty since 1999, in the Neepsend area of the city. shedkm’s outline plans include the retention and repurposing of the most interesting buildings to become a buzzing new neighbourhood with over 500 homes, community and work spaces. The site will also include a lush urban park and a new public square with shops, cafés and spaces for pop-up events.

Mark Sidebotham, Director at shedkm, said: “Cannon Brewery is a residential development with health and wellbeing at the heart of the scheme. It provides a landscaped courtyard surrounded by a combination of existing and new build structures, which respond to and build on the history of the site. It will sit at the heart of a wider regeneration story in Sheffield, where the community, both current and new, have many facilities and spaces to live, learn and play.”

The collaboration with Capital & Centric, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and Sheffield City Council, could create around £200m of investment in Sheffield.

Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire’s Mayor, said: “Our homes are our foundation; the bricks and mortar that give us security, that bring our family and communities together. And we need more of them in South Yorkshire. Cannon Brewery is an exciting opportunity to bring a huge site back to life that has stood derelict and underdeveloped for too long.”

The landmark decision will enable targeted demolition and remediation to start in Neepsend this summer, prepping the site development. In the meantime, more detail of the look and the feel of the buildings and new public spaces are being created by shedkm.
