spring forth – the flourishing shoots of workplace design

The stabilisation of the commercial sector after a volatile few years is now bringing new opportunity for sustainable growth.

At shedkm we are working on a number of UK-wide commercial projects for a wide variety of users, which are responding to emerging trends to push the evolution of workplace typologies.

The necessary refurbishment of existing built stock, rather than new build, is helping to address carbon targets but also offers the opportunity to provide more high quality and uplifting experiences for post-pandemic building users with healthier workplaces comprising additional external amenity, natural materials and ventilation. And where we are building new, there is a sharper commercial focus on locations which add value, with proximity to transport hubs and enhanced public realm.

The move towards use-change has also created an interesting momentum, with the evolving office typology becoming a barometer of social and commercial changes. We have a number of office schemes which are spearheading urban development and regeneration in a variety of ways.

At Wigan, we are working with Capital&Centric on behalf of Wigan Council, repurposing ex-council offices to provide much needed contemporary workspace for those who want to live and work locally.

In collaboration with BODE at Archway we are working on new modular workspace for young start-ups, offering affordable and sociable space as a genuine alternative to working from home or enclosed single tenant space. Nodal spaces create connectivity drive both efficiency and well-being.

In Swansea we are working with Milligans and Urban Splash on new offices which are an integral part of a bigger masterplan targeting urban renewal. Workspace has been designed to meet ambitious sustainability standards with a focus on occupier operated natural ventilation & low carbon materials.

At Brent Cross, just 12 minutes from Kings Cross, we have worked with Related Argent on their ambitious mixed-use masterplan and commercial offer which will provide a lively, well-connected, high-value commercial cluster, with enhanced amenity and infrastructure for new and existing communities. Internally, we are using recycled materials to create warm, healthy workspaces and prioritise sustainable environments.

Our projects speak to the long term health of commercial typologies which are flexing to accommodate significant change and by being more agile and responsive to our changing needs.
